It was Jackie Robinson Day around baseball today, and the Yankee bats finally woke up. The Yankees defeated the Angles by a score of 11-5.
Derek Jeter is off to a great start to the year, and has been on fire after getting hit number 3000 last summer. After hitting a line drive double to right in his second at bat, he cracked a 3-run homerun into the short porch in right. It was a Jeterian swing, as he took a middle in pitch, kept his hands in, and drove the ball to the right field seats.
Raul Ibanez also hit a 2-run homerun, his being a little more extravagant than Jeter’s. He hit a towering shot to right field. Ibanez’s age was questioned when the Yankees signed him, but he has come up with some big hits for the team. He only has 4 hits this year, but he has 9 RBIs.
Ivan Nova wasn’t great, but he wasn’t bad either. He didn’t have his best stuff, but he went 6 innings, giving up 4 runs, striking out 8. The win marks the 14th straight decision that Nova has gotten for a win, which ties him with Whitey Ford.
Jim Joyce, the home plate umpire, gave the fans some comedy, with his constant yell/shriek of his strike call. How can he yell that loud, that many times? Another thing I found funny was Mark Texeira stealing a base, he actually looked somewhat fast….lets hope he’s not sacrificing power for speed.
Overall it was a good night for the Yanks, and they come out of this series with 2 out 3 wins, against a very talented Angels team. Tomorrow night could be trouble, as we have Wild Freddy pitching, and are facing Carl Pavano.(Yeah, that GREAT Yankee)
